Cleaning up after the earthquake in Nepal
Nepal has been rocked by two major earthquakes - a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake on 25th April followed by a 7.3 on 12th May. Destroyed buildings and fear from the relentless aftershocks has driven much of the population in Kathmandu and surrounding districts to sleep outside in makeshift camps. Now that the search and rescue operations have all but stopped, there is a large and long-term clean up effort required – to manage human waste, solid waste and construction debris.
Summary
Jo Hill, Waste Ventures Charities Executive Director, has been living in Nepal for the past two years.
"Support services are breathing life back into Kathmandu now but towns and villages outside the capital are facing a much tougher road to recovery. There is nowhere to put waste there so it is either burnt or left to rot creating an environmental and health hazard in already vulnerable communities. We want to focus our resources to have a meaningful impact. We will be working with local partners in communities to manage and process waste in safe, healthy and sustainable ways. This work will provide livelihoods and income for local people over the long term."
We are asking for donations to support this work and we will ensure that your money goes directly to projects on the ground. Further information about our organisation at www.waste-impact.org.
