Grant

Videre is a ground-breaking human rights charity which equips oppressed communities in hard-to-access areas with cameras, technology and training to safely and effectively expose violence, human rights violations and other systemic abuses.

Videre envisions a world where no human rights violation goes unseen and without remedy; where everyone – regardless of who or where they are – can use the power of images to prevent violence, stop atrocities, and spur social justice.

Summary

Videre envisions a world where no human rights violation goes unseen and without remedy; where everyone – regardless of who or where they are – can use the power of images to prevent violence, stop atrocities, and spur social justice.

We provide voices to the voiceless by equipping oppressed communities in hard-to-access areas with cameras, technology and training to safely and effectively expose violence, human rights violations and other systemic abuses.

Social Impact

Videre gives local activists the equipment, training and support needed to gather previously unseen, verified video evidence of human rights violations and the context surrounding them and then strategically distributes it to those who can create change - be they mainstream media, lawyers or decision-makers.

We are often the primary source of visual information in the areas we operate: providing footage to media outlets ranging from the BBC to local radio channels, supply research to large NGOs such as Human Rights Watch and briefing change agents from local NGOs to the US National Security Council. Our networks are able to capture footage that no one else can, and armed with this footage we have:

· Deterred election violence

· Stopped hate speech and incitement by politicians, leading to private prosecutions of hate speech

· Uncovered political manipulation

· Monitored militia activity in two countries

· Exposed violence against human rights defenders

· Created community-led movements to end female genital mutilation

How your donation helps

Demand for our work far outweighs our current ability to supply it. You can help Videre to partner with activists in situations where the need for our work is greatest and take our methodology global.

Your support will make sure that we can adapt best-in-class tools and technologies to meet the needs of the daily, on-the-ground struggle for justice.

About our Co-Founder

Oren Yakobovich is a social entrepreneur working at the intersection of human rights and film-making for 20 years.  He is a leading voice on how to use visual information to create sustainable, lasting positive change in areas of conflict. He co-founded Videre in 2008, an NGO with ground breaking methodology to equip oppressed communities with customized technology to uncover information from places where media can't or won't go. Before founding Videre, Oren led the video department at the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem. At B’Tselem, he developed ‘Shooting Back,’ a video project that has trained hundreds of citizens in the West Bank that lives in the most dangerous places to use cameras to fight for justice. The project won several awards, including the One World Media award and the International Media Award’s Cutting Edge Prize.

Prior to his work with human rights NGOs, Oren made several documentaries mostly focusing on political and social issues. Oren served in the Israeli army as an officer in an infantry unit, becoming a conscious objector after witnessing injustice in the Occupied Territories and serving a period of time in the army jail.  A sought-after expert on using technology to expose human rights violations, Oren is frequently called upon to brief civil society, government, international organisation and media decision-makers.
