Global Community Investment via Calvert Foundation CIN
Loan
Raises funds for Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) in both the US and around the world
For millions of disadvantaged people in the U.S. and internationally, the door to financial opportunity is closed. Since 1995, Calvert Foundation has been working to open that door and let people in. Calvert Foundation is a nonprofit that has pioneered a new type of investing through our Community Investment Note that delivers a social and financial return. We make it possible for everyday people to invest in organizations around the world that empower people living in low-income communities.
The Note was the first retail impact investment with a global reach available to non-accredited investors, and through our new Women INvesting in Women INitiative (WIN-WIN), Calvert Foundation is the first organization to offer a retail impact investment product with a gender lens. We believe in giving a hand-up and enabling people to lift themselves out of poverty.

Social Impact
Imagine your life without access to credit. Around the world and here in the U.S., millions face this dilemma, lacking the essential financial services necessary to become self-sufficient. As a result, the gap between rich and poor is widening. This investment works to close this gap by channeling flexible, affordable capital to areas underserved by traditional financial institutions. Your investment helps families rise above the cycle of poverty by financing microenterprises, expanding their small businesses and securing affordable homes. Since 1995, our investors have financed over 193,500 microenterprises, generating nearly 293,000 jobs. In the U.S., we have financed more than 5,300 small businesses, 13,000 affordable homes and, financed over 17,000 community facilities.
By investing in the Global Community Investment, you are helping to alleviate poverty around the world and locally in the United States. Your dollars are put into a revolving loan pool of the organizations Calvert Foundation supports, so you can be sure your investment dollars are going where they are needed most at any given time. This portfolio of loans, professionally managed by Calvert Foundation, includes dozens of international microfinance organizations and other U.S. based nonprofits such as Habitat for Humanity International and ACCION Texas.
Impact Example
Rahinatu is a 19 year old final year student of the Savelugu Senior Secondary School and a client of Sinapi Aba Trust. She has succeeded in employing her mother (a trader and the last of three wives to a deceased husband), her senior sister and two helping hands in her kenkey business.
Rahinatu was determined to stop poverty in her family and was self motivated. She started by making iced kenkey which she sold at school, the proceeds of which she used to pay for her education. When the woman who sold kenkey in their school left, she decided to take up the challenge.
She started by selling kenkey to the pupils and teachers in her school. At that time she could sell about 150 pieces each day. Her loan from SAT gave her the opportunity to expand. With her current loan of ¢1,500,000, Rahi now has a popular place in town where she sells to the community as a whole. Today she is able to sell 500 pieces of kenkey to the school and the community. She now has plans to expand her business, generate more profits, and support her younger siblings in school.
