Calvert Foundation

Community Investment Note
Bond

Raises funds for Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) in both the US and around the world

For millions of disadvantaged people in the U.S. and internationally, the door to financial opportunity is closed. Since 1995, Calvert Foundation has been working to open that door and let people in. Calvert Foundation is a nonprofit that has pioneered a new type of investing through our Community Investment Note that delivers a social and financial return. We make it possible for everyday people to invest in organizations around the world that empower people living in low-income communities.

The Note was the first retail impact investment with a global reach available to non-accredited investors, and through our new Women INvesting in Women INitiative (WIN-WIN), Calvert Foundation is the first organization to offer a retail impact investment product with a gender lens. We believe in giving a hand-up and enabling people to lift themselves out of poverty.

Summary

The Community Investment Note is a high-impact fixed income product that channels capital to a diversified portfolio of over 250 nonprofits and social enterprises.

For 15 years, Calvert Foundation has offered an investment product that allows everyday people to make a difference in a smart, sustainable way. Calvert Foundation manages more than $200 million raised from thousands of caring investors who want to lift people out of poverty while earning a financial return on their investment.

Financial Performance

The Community Investment Note is a security that meets federal and state registration requirements, and allows investors a convenient way to make communities part of their investment portfolios. The Note portfolio is professionally managed by a team that uses industry-leading due diligence to carefully vet each group we loan to. So you can be assured that your investment dollars will be used effectively to help individuals and families.

  • We have over $28 million in security enhancements on a $200 million portfolio, providing many layers of protection for investors. This means that there is money set aside to be available to our investors in the case of portfolio loss.
  • We have incurred losses of less than 1 percent over the last 15 years.
  • None of our investors have ever lost money.
